Many authors write new books every day and we get to read them this or that day, no doubt. However, only a few among them get the luxury of a permanent residence in our minds because we just don’t love every author we read. I have been a ‘very’ voracious reader all my life and I just love reading. It was recent that I got to know about Shilpa Raj and her upcoming book The Elephant Chaser’s Daughter. Luckily, I also received the pre-release copy for a review. Before the review, however, I thought it’d be so good if I could let my readers know about the author first and that’s why I am writing about Shilpa Raj today. And first things first, I am sure that Shilpa Raj is going to be the next big thing in Indian writing in English because of her honest and upfront narration as well as maturity with which she has handled the theme in her very debut work!
Born and initially brought up in a Dalit family in Karnataka, Shilpa Raj has seen poverty, disparity and lacks from the early days of her life. She was supposed to be one among them who just face the discrimination without much noise. Nevertheless, things for Shilpa changed when she was picked up for Shanti Bhavan by a philanthropist and began her life there – away from the socially outcasted life where one is compelled to feel being downtrodden! She completed her schooling at Shanti Bhavan, a school for poor children. She went on to complete her M.Sc. in Psychological Counselling.
From the early days of her education, Shilpa always wanted to be an author and kept pursuing her hobby with a dedicated passion. She began writing a journal (the recollections of her early life, her family members, their ancestors and many other things). She also used to write stories for her friends and all this continued until the day she decided to let the world know about herself and her past and the tormented life of millions like herself through her memoir. Shilpa Raj made the bold decision to get her memoir published and thus became the first ever dalit woman from India to have published her memoir! The Elephant Chaser’s Daughter will be releasing worldwide on 28th of July 2017 but one can get the copy before it launches from Amazon. The early reviews for her work were all positive and the book critics from India and other nations are seeing the book as something sensible and critical. Founder of The Book Blog, Nidhi Sharma, feels that Shilpa’s writing is bold and honest and an eye-opener at the same time. Alok Mishra has said that the book will surely be a landmark in the history of Dalit writings. The Kirkus review has also praised the book and so has been done by many others nationally and internationally!
If you also want to see what kind of an author Shilpa Raj is, please buy a copy of her book from Amazon before it is released worldwide officially on 28th. Give The Elephant Chaser’s Daughter a read and let yourself know what a Dalit author has to say to the nation. Buy the book from the link below:
